OEMs are designing exclusive, scalable battery packs to accommodate diverse vehicle architectures. This approach demands an array of cell geometries, chemistries, and operating voltages. In the U.S., OEMs are introducing BEV architectures in high-end differentiated market segments. BEV profitability is a constant race to achieve the lowest $/kWh. Cell Manufacturers rely on economies of scale and long-term contracts with raw material suppliers to guarantee the targeted price. Lamentably, they also must offer state of the art cell technology, preferred cell geometries, and multiple application-driven chemistries. Recent global macro-events will reduce the customer's disposable income and preferences towards high-end transportation. This externality will re-shape the business proposition of the Disruptor OEM, the Incumbent OEM, and the Cell manufacturer. RSC analyzed multiple mass-produced battery packs, including Tesla Model 3, Chevy Bolt, and Nissan Leaf. Even though there are fundamental philosophical differences and cells are decades away from technological maturity. RSC identified some components the industry could benefit from cost reduction or standardization. In this presentation, RSC unfolds details on one or two of the following battery cost drivers:
• Battery cell joining method
• BMS architecture vs. harnessing
• Internal cooling system design and manufacturing process
• Structural technology and packaging distribution
• External cooling systems modularity
