Engineers are continually focused on designing battery cells and modules for optimal performance, efficiency and safety. In the design phase, module assembly materials should also be taken into consideration in order to help achieve these goals. A diligent approach to materials selection can aid in the manufacturing process, help to ensure module performance reliability and address safety concerns. This presentation will examine the benefits of silicone encapsulants with regards to module manufacturing, module operation and cell protection, such as in the case cell failure and the mitigation of thermal runaway. Silicone foams used as encapsulation materials can also provide the added benefit of weight savings in module applications.
Silicone materials can provide key benefits in module manufacturing, operational efficiency and module safety in the event of a cell failure. This presentation will touch on all these topics however will focus on the demonstration of silicone encapsulation material performance in mini-module cell failure thermal propagation tests.
The intended target audience for this presentation should be battery cell and module design and safety engineers, battery pack/chassis structural engineers (for EV applications) and Battery Management System (BMS) design engineers.
