As worldwide pressure for electrification increases, automotive manufacturers need to bring affordable electric vehicles to market to enable widespread adoption. This requires a significant reduction in battery costs with a volatile raw material market, a need for increased performance targets like energy density to satisfy consumer demand, and maintaining top levels of safety. In these circumstances the market is more acceptive to application customized solutions for cathodes. High nickel cathodes (80% Ni and higher) are projected to overtake the market in the next ten years. To compensate for the sacrificed safety in introducing high nickel cathodes, a unique solution may be blending them with safer cathodes such as LMFP. In this study, Mercedes-Benz Research and Development North America partnered with Wildcat to systematically study the effect of blending two sources of NMC 811 cathodes with two different LMFP cathodes. Using Wildcat's unique High Throughput platform, various processing, material, and testing conditions were studied in parallel to understand the overall effect of cathode blending for an EV application.
