As electric vehicles and stationary storage continue to be adopted in large numbers, OEMs, fleet operators, and energy providers must grapple with the challenges of maintaining large battery packs. All batteries degrade, but the challenge is knowing by how much and when they may fail. This session is about using ac impedance of battery cells, modules, and packs, as a measure of battery health. The AC Impedance of a battery, measured using a technique called electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), strongly correlates to the battery's electrochemical degradation and state-of-health (SOH). There is strong scientific support for using EIS as a proxy for battery health, but, before EIS can be widely deployed in field applications, more must be understood about 1) how to quantify the relationship between impedance and SOH, and 2) how to perform impedance measurement outside of the laboratory and in real-world scenarios. This session will dive into each of these aspects above and provide guidance on the test procedures and algorithms required to use AC impedance for state-of-health estimation. A case study on applying the technology to second-life battery grading applications will also be presented.

Takeaway

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) can be a powerful technique to understand and predict long term battery performance for field batteries. ReJoule has developed hardware and software tools to measure and model batteries using EIS.

Intended Audience

This session is intended for battery system engineers, electrochemists, battery management system engineers, and people interested in battery optimization. The contents of the session are rather technical, so it is a prerequisite that the target audience have a basic working knowledge of battery systems.
